During her residency, Pixel Heller will create new paintings and costumes inspired by her Black cultural heritage, while workshopping presentation strategies for her multidisciplinary practice. Drawing especially from the traditions of Carnival, Pixel will use paint and textiles to explore identity, resistance, and joy through the dynamic colours, forms, and characters of Caribbean masquerades.

Edward Burtynsky’s first solo institutional exhibition in New York City in over twenty years, reveals the depth of Burtynsky’s investigation into the human alteration of natural landscapes around the world, showing their present fragility and enduring beauty in equal measure. @icp

Curated by David Campany, Creative Director at ICP, this retrospective exhibition will present over seventy photographs, including many of Burtynsky’s landmark images, some of which have never previously been shown, along with three ultra high-resolution murals. The exhibition will also include a visual and narrative timeline of Burtynsky’s creative life. Intentionally scheduled to extend through Climate Week NYC in September 2025, The Great Acceleration will serve not only as an urgent call for action, but will also give visitors the opportunity to appreciate the sublimity that remains in the landscape, while also deepening our understanding of the challenges that confront us today. In this way, The Great Acceleration upholds ICP’s long-standing and core commitment to present concerned photography that can inspire new audiences.

About the exhibition:
The Tree Planters is a striking photographic series by award-winning Canadian photographer Rita Leistner. Through large-scale, painterly portraits captured in real-time, Leistner documents the gruelling and heroic labour of professional tree planters in British Columbia. Her work explores themes of human endurance, environmental stewardship, and Canada’s evolving relationship with its forests.

Between 2016 and 2019, Leistner embedded herself off-grid with planting crews, living for months at a time in remote camps. Immersed in the physically demanding world of seasonal tree planting, she documented workers as they planted thousands of saplings each day across the rugged, clear-cut terrain. Her photographs reveal both the intensity of the labour and the resilience of the planters, transforming them into luminous, almost mythic figures.

Using dramatic lighting and dynamic compositions, Leistner elevates scenes of physical toil into compelling visual tributes—portraits that highlight the planters’ deep, often spiritual connection to the land. Having planted more than half a million trees herself, Leistner brings a rare, firsthand understanding and deep reverence to her subject.

The Tree Planters stands as a tribute to the generations of Canadians who have reshaped the nation’s geography and contributed to its cultural identity—one tree at a time.

Together their stories weave together a complex history of what occupation meant for the Dutch, incorporating memories of those who survived and those who perished. Both the artist’s father and mother lived through this period, and he was raised on their stories.

It was our pleasure to present Maryn Western with the Toronto Image Works sponsored award on Opening Night for her Exhibition: Blood, Lead, and Tears. @photosbymaryn

Blood, Lead, and Tears is a multimedia installation responding to the 2024 study, “Tampons as a source of exposure to metalloids” by Jenni A. Shearston, which found that most well-known tampon brands had unsafe concentrations of toxic heavy metals (such as lead, cadmium, and arsenic). Due to the absorptive tissue within the vagina, these metals can directly enter the body’s bloodstream, potentially causing great harm.
To explore this concept, I photographed a wide range of menstruating subjects who have used tampons on Polaroid film, degrading their image within chemical concentrations that reflect the amount of chemistry they have been exposed to from these products. Through the physical degradation of the portrait standing in for the subject’s body, one can investigate how the exposure to heavy metals within tampons has degraded a variety of menstruating bodies over the course of their lives, and how it can be visually represented.
This project aims to explore themes of both externally and internally driven misogyny, as well as the lack of education and respect for the menstruating body that is still prevalent. Menstruation is a process that affects approximately 50% of the population, yet the subject is considered taboo and disgusting, despite being a normal bodily function. Tampons have been marketed as the best option for menstruation, but they have been produced without proper warnings, exposing people to harm for years without acknowledgement or attempts to create a safer product.
